The marketing of hemp products in Paraguay could begin as soon as December of this year under a government program aimed at supporting the sector, Ministry of Agriculture (MAG) officials said.

Moisés Bertoni Hicar, a deputy in the ministry, announced the development recently as he met with stakeholders in Santa Rosa in the Misiones administrative district in the south of the country. Hicar met with the Association of Roseño Producers, which represents 164 members who are horticulturists and farmers.

“We hope hemp will be one more source of income for the small producer, we currently have a seed plot of more than 200 hectares, and there is a lot of interest from producers in the country,” Hicar said.

Trials are underway

MAG last year approved a request from Healthy Grains SA, a farming and agriculture consulting firm, to import 17 seed varieties from Hungary, France, China and the United States. The company is now conducting trials in fields under the Paraguayan Institute of Agrarian Technology to assess which varieties will best adapt to the country’s soil and climate. Healthy Grains provides training, financing and counseling for small farmers in two communities located in northern Paraguay.

Paraguayan officials foresee the production of fiber for textiles, oil from the plants’ seeds and and flour from hemp green matter.
